Lab 15
Bonding: Molecular Geometries and Hybridization
Unit 6⏱ 90 minGuided Inquiry
Overview
How can we predict molecular shapes, bond angles and hybridizations of molecules? How do we calculate formal charge and what does it tell us?
Objectives
- How can we predict molecular shapes, bond angles and hybridizations of molecules? How do we calculate formal charge and what does it tell us?
- Connect observations to AP Chemistry models and calculations.
⚠️ Wear protective goggles and an apron. Follow your teacher’s safety directions for all chemicals and equipment.
Materials Needed
Procedure
1
Obtain a molecular model building kit. Study the reference card to identify the different kinds of atoms.
2
Make observations about the model kit that was given (See the materials sheet provided). Note that the plastic tubes can represent single, double or triple bonds. Construct models of the following molecules: CO2 , BH3 , NO2-1 , CCl4 , PH3 , H2O , PCl5 , SF4 , ClF3 , XeF2 , SF6 , BrF5 , XeF4 Record your data on the table below. Record observations about the molecules made.
Pre-Lab Questions
1. A measurement or procedural deviation occurs during the experiment.
